A Message from our Principal
As a proud graduate of the Catawba County Schools system, I wanted to be a contributing member of a district that values children and community, has a tradition of excellence, and celebrates innovation. I hope to help create the same kind of positive impact on future generations as was provided for me.

Experience
Prior to entering education, I worked in the field of advertising and graphic design. I have worked for CCS since 1994, beginning my education at C.H. Tuttle Middle School as an Art teacher. During that time, I obtained my National Board Certification as well as my Masters in Art. I continued my teaching career at Mill Creek Middle School until 1996, when I became Assistant Principal at Blackburn Elementary and later at St. Stephens Elementary. In July 2013 I was named Principal at Jacobs Fork Middle School and moved to Startown Elementary in 2015 --back to where my CCS education began! I obtained my Elementary Ed license in 2012. I am a graduate of NCPAPA Developing Future Leaders, NCPAPA Distinguished Leadership in Practice, and NCPAPA Digital Learning/Personalized Learning cohort. In addition to being a part of CCS, I taught Art History at CVCC for several years.
Education
Assoc. Fine Arts/Commercial Design - Gaston College
BA Art Education - Lenoir-Rhyne College
MA Art Education - Winthrop University
Masters School Administration (MSA) - Gardner-Webb University
Ed.S. Educational Leadership - Appalachian State University
Why I Became an Educator
Although I did not originally intend to pursue a career in education, I was greatly influenced by my high school art teacher at Fred T. Foard High School, Barbara Cordell, to pursue my creative passion. When I look back, I realize I was influenced by a great number of Catawba County Schools teachers, who not only taught me, but encouraged me to be the best person I could be.
Something Unique About Me
I was a baton twirler for the FTF Tiger Marching band, and I can still twirl a baton today (although probably not as well!). I love theatre and dance, and can often be found on the stage of The Green Room Community Theatre. I have a passion for medical missions, traveling annually to serve in San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic. I also love sports and am a baseball mom forever!
Anything Else You Want Us To Know?
I attended Startown Elementary School, so being named principal here is truly like coming home.

Favorite Place in Catawba County
As a young child and into adulthood, I have loved enjoying time on Lookout Shoals Lake or, as everyone in Catawba County knows it by, Lake Lookout. From lazy days on a boat, to fishing or kayaking, Lake Lookout is a hidden gem in Catawba County.
As a CCS alumni, I valued the education I was provided and wanted to give back to my community. Joining Catawba County Schools has allowed me to return the favor and invest in my community by helping shape young men and women into productive citizens.

Why I Joined Education
I got into education because I had already been an assistant director of a daycare facility in the past and liked working around kids, but office work was my first job choice. The combination of office/kids in a school setting was perfect.
I had worked in grocery and had been an assistant manager trainee, while working in the customer service office helping out in combination with being a dairy/frozen food manager for years. Until Super K went out of business, I was their dairy/frozen manager too and seafood manager. I even won a corporate contest for creative display using ice to sculpture a scene with seafood! I had also worked in the cash office as the office manager when Walmart first came to Hickory and was located where Hamrick's is. Again, this wasn't first shift and became hectic with a swing shift and young kids. I loved the office setting there as well. A couple other retail experiences including an asst. bookkeeper while going to high school. I worked 32 hours a week and while attending school when I was 18 years old.
